Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 14966 (NWA 14966) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Dec Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated) History: Purchased by Eric Twelker in December 2021 from a dealer in Agadir, Morocco. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Although this specimen retains its original gabbroic texture (apparent mean grainsize ~1.5 mm), both the constituent pigeonite and anorthite have been thoroughly transformed into vesicular, ultra-fine grained polycrystalline aggregates. Accessory phases include ferroan subcalcic augite, ballen silica polymorph (exhibiting a "crackled" texture), medium-Ti chromite and ilmenite. Geochemistry: Pigeonite (Fs36.9-46.7Wo7.3-16.0, FeO/MnO = 28-33, N = 5), ferroan subcalcic augite (Fs66.0Wo22.4, FeO/MnO = 37), anorthite (An91.9±0.0Or0.3, N = 3). Classification: Eucrite (unbrecciated, gabbroic, shock-melted). Specimens: 21.9 g including one a polished slice plus polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Twelker. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
