Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 14962 (NWA 14962) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Dec Classification: Martian meteorite (Nakhlite) History: Purchased by Terry Boudreaux in December 2021 from a dealer in Zagora, Morocco. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL). Aggregate (mean grainsize ~0.7 mm) of stubby prismatic grains of augite and subordinate equant, anhedral grains of olivine, together with minor intercumulus birefringent plagioclase, chlorapatite and Fe-Ti oxide. Augite exhibits both simple and polysynthetic twinning, and some grains are partially mantled by exsolved pigeonite. Olivine contains some inclusions of medium-Ti chromite, rare melt inclusions composed of alkali feldspathic glass+chlorapatite+pyrrhotite, and minor veinlets (very pale brownish-green in thin section) of "iddingsite-like" material. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa56.3-56.9, FeO/MnO = 51-52, N = 4), augite (Fs21.1-27.5Wo39.6-30.2, FeO/MnO = 28-31, N = 3), low-Ca pyroxene in exsolved pigeonite rim (Fs45.6-46.9Wo5.3-6.0, FeO/MnO = 32, N = 3), plagioclase (An32.4-34.9Or6.1-3.9, N = 3). Classification: Nakhlite. Specimens: 13.0 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. T. Boudreaux. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
