Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14974 (NWA 14974)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Aug

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in August 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed chondrules containing Cr-magnetite and devitrified glass (apparent diameter 1220 ± 450 µm, N = 25) and amoeboid, very fine grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~40 vol.%, light to dark brown in thin section) containing Cr-magnetite, intermediate plagioclase and rare sulfide. One examined CAI consists of gehlenite+diopside+intermediate plagioclase with minor gypsum (secondary).

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.7±11.0, range Fa6.5-32.8, N = 7), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs8.1±12.6Wo2.8±1.6, range Fs0.7-22.8Wo1.0-3.8, N = 3), pigeonite (Fs1.6±0.6Wo11.2±1.4, range Fs1.2-2.0Wo10.2-12.2, N = 2), subcalcic augite (Fs1.5Wo28.5; Fs0.9Wo34.8, Fs1.5Wo38.2; N = 3), augite (Fs12.2±3.6Wo48.8±0.5, range Fs8.1-14.3Wo48.3-49.2, N = 3), plagioclase (An18.0Or5.3; An27.4Or3.4; N = 2), magnetite (Cr2O3 3.2-3.6 wt.%, N = 6).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3).

Specimens: 20.5 g including one polished thin section at PSF; remainder with Mr. J. Whitcomb.
