Antarctica

Find: 2019 Jan 19

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5)

History: The meteorite was recovered as part of the Lost Meteorites of Antarctica project, which was funded in the UK by the Leverhulme Trust and supported by the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Manchester. These samples were collected as part of the project’s first field season in austral summer December 2018 - January 2019 by a two person field party consisting of Katherine Joy and Julie Baum. Found on firn. Altitude 1129 m.

Physical characteristics: Mass: 0.36 g. Pieces: 1. Dimensions: 1 × 1 × 0.5 cm. An irregular part stone, with 50% black fusion crust and rusty light grey interior.

Petrography: Abundant well-defined chondrules (up to 1 mm in diameter) and coarse-grained matrix. Metal and sulfide distributed throughout, some rimming chondrules. Plagioclase grains up to 0.3 mm.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: All analyses by EPMA. Olivine Fa25.6±0.3 (N=7). Pyroxene Fs21.2±0.2Wo1.8±0.1 (N=7). Plagioclase An9.7±1.7Ab86.3±1.3Or3.9±0.4 (N=3).

Classification: ordinary chondrite (L5)

Specimens: 0.32 g type specimen (main mass) held at the NHM London.
