Northwest Africa 14449 (NWA 14449)

Purchased: 2015

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3)

History: Purchased by Ziyao Wang in 2015 from a Moroccan dealer at the Hunan Mineral and Gem Show in Chenzhou City, China.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed unequilibrated, glass-bearing chondrules (apparent diameter 340±270 µm, N = 25) plus lithic unequilibrated chondrite clasts are set in a fine-grained matrix containing troilite (partly altered to Fe hydroxides), pentlandite, chromite (with variable Ti content), and chlorapatite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa26.7±14.8, range Fa2.2-41.8, N = 8), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs19.8±12.4Wo1.1±0.9, range Fs5.2-30.5Wo0.3-2.0, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs16.8Wo30.5), augite (15.1Wo43.0).

Classification: R3 chondrite.

Specimens: 20.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with WangZ.
