Northwest Africa 14770 (NWA 14770) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: Purchased by Rob Wesel from a meteorite dealer in Algeria, 2021. Physical characteristics: Sawcut surfaces reveal a relatively fine-grained rock of with dark green, dark brown, and light-colored grains. No significant shock melt veins were observed. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Electron microprobe analysis and reflected light microscopy of a polished mount show this meteorite to be an olivine-phyric igneous rock with subophitic texture. Pyroxenes and olivines show core to rim zonation that reflect igneous crystallization and iron enrichment trends. Plagioclase has been converted to maskelynite. Minor amounts of chromite, Cr-Ti spinel, Ti-Cr magnetite, ilmenite, Cl-rich apatite, and merrillite were detected. Geochemistry: (A. Ross, UNM) Olivine Fa55.6±9.2, core to rim Fa48-76, Fe/Mn=54±2, n=9; pigeonite Fs43.5±11.9Wo13.9±4.3, Fe/Mn=33±3, n=11; subcalcic augite Fs23.0±8.2Wo35.2±4.3, Fe/Mn=31±3, n=2; plagioclase An59.9±6.8Ab39.3±6.1, n=7. Classification: Martian, olivine-phyric shergottite. Pyroxene crystallization trends are similar to NWA 1110, however this meteorite is significantly more ferroan than typical olivine-phyric shergottites, in particular the olivines have unusually high fayalite contents. Specimens: 23 g on deposit at UNM, Craig Zlimen holds 40 g, Rob Wesel holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
