Northwest Africa 15121 (NWA 15121)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3)

History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang and Juan Chen in 2022 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Very fresh specimen. Relatively small, well-formed unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 480±300 µm, N = 25) containing devitrified glass and some plagioclase are set in a fine grained matrix (~30 vol.%) containing relatively ferroan olivine (Fa44-47), pentlandite and troilite. Metal is absent.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa30.3±12.0, range Fa5.9-43.0, N = 16), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs17.4±6.4Wo1.7±1.1, range Fs1.4-23.6Wo0.4-3.6, N = 9), pigeonite (Fs28.5Wo8.2), subcalcic augite (Fs23.6Wo29.0).

Classification: R3 chondrite.

Specimens: 21.6 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang and Mr. J. Chen.
