Northwest Africa 15196 (NWA 15196) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: May, 2022 Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Temara, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Dark grayish to greenish rock without fusion crust. Petrography: Sub-ophitic textured meteorite predominantly composed of up to 2 mm sized prismatic, irregularly zoned pyroxene and lath-shaped maskelynite grains showing preferred orientation. Minor phases include exsolved ilmenite, troilite, and apatite. Myrmekitic intergrowths of fayalite, hedenbergite, and silica are abundant. The meteorite is highly shocked and contains shock melt pockets. Cracks are often filled with secondary calcite. Geochemistry: complex zoned pyroxene: Fs48.9±17.9Wo19.6±5.1 (Fs29.0-77.4Wo13.5-29.2, FeO/MnO=33±4, n=15); maskelynite: An55.2±1.3Ab43.6±1.4Or1.2±0.4 (An52.2-56.8Ab41.2-46.4Or0.7-2.0, n=10); fayalite: Fa97.9±0.1, FeO/MnO=44±1, n=3 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
