Northwest Africa 15238 (NWA 15238)

Purchased: 2021 Feb

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang in February 2021 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 930 ± 440 µm, N = 26) containing glass or devitrified glass are set in a fine grained matrix containing altered kamacite, chromite and troilite. Minor shock melt veinlets are present.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa20.8±11.1, range Fa4.5-35.2, N = 9; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.02-0.11 wt.%, mean 0.04 wt.%, sd 0.02 wt.%, N = 13), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs22.2±7.8Wo1.8±1.6, range Fs5.8-35.9Wo0.3-4.4, N = 10), subcalcic augite (Fs18.2Wo10.8). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.24.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3).

Specimens: 33.7 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang.
