Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 15254 (NWA 15254) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2022 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3) History: Many samples different sizes (410 g) were found in northwest Africa. Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER) purchased the samples from the Saharawi meteorite dealer Yahdih Buhali Omar in July 2022. Physical characteristics: An irregularly shaped, dark-brown fragment shows a polished face where numerous small chondrules are observed. Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample shows numerous chondrules, AOAs, CAIs and grains of FeNi metal set within a fine-grained ferroan matrix. Chondrules have an average apparent diameter of 234 μm (n=59). Additional minerals are: plagioclase, troilite, rare phosphate and chromite. Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (Fa10.6±15.6, Fe/Mn=89.4±15.6, n=28, Cr2O3 in olivine (Fa>2)=0.13±0.06, n=19); low Ca pyroxene (Fs2.0±1.0Wo1.3±1.0, Fe/Mn=16.7±7.0, n=8). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3, C-S2, W2) Based on chondrule diameters, presence of CAIs and mineral compositions, sample is a CO3. Based on mean and SD of Cr2O3 of ferroan olivine chondrules (0.13±0.06), estimated petrologic sub type is 3.2. Specimens: Adrián Contreras Gómez (Crater Meteorites) holds the main masses. A 33.29 g windowed individual and a polished thin section are on deposit at App. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
