Northwest Africa 15108 (NWA 15108)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in May, 2022.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish fragment largely covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a grayish to greenish interior and consists of sparse, well separated chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 900 µm) set in abundant recrystallized matrix dominated by ferroan Ni-bearing olivine. Minor phases are low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, intermediate plagioclase, and FeS. Cr-rich magnetite is abundant; no metal detected.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa27.1±0.2 (Fa26.7-27.3, FeO/MnO=94±9; NiO=0.44±0.04 wt%, n=7); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs23.4±0.6Wo0.9±0.5 (Fs22.2-24.5Wo0.5-2.1, n=9); Ca-pyroxene: Fs8.8±1.5Wo44.2±4.1 (Fs7.5-11.2Wo37.4-46.9, n=7); feldspar: An34.6-71.3Ab28.2-63.2Or0.5-2.1, n=4; magnetite contains 3.9±0.1 wt% Cr2O3, n=10
