Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 15301 (NWA 15301) Morocco Purchased: 2011 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4) History: Sample was purchased in 2011 at the Tucson mineral show from AAaronson who acquired it from Morocco. Sample is catalogued at ROM as M60307. Physical characteristics: Incomplete fusion crust showing regmaglypts. Broken surfaces have visible chondrules. All surfaces show mature desert polish. Petrography: Cut faces show abundant metal in a rusty brown chondritic matrix. In polished thin section, chondrules of types POP, PO, RP, CC and BO are well-defined in a dark matrix, and have average diameter 463±210 µm (n=45). Chondrule mesostasis is amorphous to finely recrystallized. Olivine and pyroxene grains typically show sharp extinction. Metal grains are surrounded by Fe oxides. In BSE images, Ca-poor pyroxene shows subtle compositional zoning. Geochemistry: EPMA: Olivine: Fa17.50±0.51 (n=29); Ca-poor pyroxene: Fs14.36±3.22 Wo1.26±0.90 (n=22); Ca-rich pyroxene: Fs6.05±0.76Wo41.36±5.25 (n=11). Magnetic susceptibility measured on a 27.18 g endpiece is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.89. Classification: Ordinary chondrite: H4 (S1) W3. Chondrule measured size and definition is consistent with an H chondrite. EPMA olivine and pyroxene compositions and compositional variation indicate H4 chondrite. Bulk magnetic susceptibility is consistent with a weathered H chondrite. Specimens: Type specimen location: ROM. Main mass: Gregory. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
