Northwest Africa 15356 (NWA 15356)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: Purchased from Craig Zlimen in 2021 from an Algerian meteorite dealer.

Physical characteristics: Single stone with dark brown fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Specimen displays a brecciated texture and is comprised primarily of mm-sized lithic fragments and isolated sub-angular elongate/equant plagioclase and clinopyroxene grains (Av. ~0.3 mm, up to ~0.5 mm) set within a finer-grained groundmass rich in pigeonite. Accessory phases include Cr-spinel, ilmenite, SiO2-rich glass, and troilite.

Geochemistry: Pigeonite (Fs49.9±4.0Wo12.6±3.3, range Fs45.7-64.1Wo6.1-24.5, Fe/Mn=29±2, n=30), High-Ca Pyroxene (Fs47.3±31.9Wo34.8±11.6, range Fs24.7-69.9Wo26.6-43.1, Fe/Mn=34±4, n=2), Calcic Plagioclase (An90.6±0.5, range An89.0-91.3, n=20).

Classification: HED Achondrite (Eucrite).

Specimens: 20.65 grams at Cascadia, main mass with Craig Zlimen.
