Northwest Africa 15422 (NWA 15422)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Nicholas Gessler in 2022 from a Moroccan dealer.

Physical characteristics: An angular fusion-crusted individual stone (1220 g).

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 700 ± 300 µm, N = 26) containing glass and devitrified glass are set in a fine grained matrix containing altered kamacite, taenite, troilite, chromite and very minor Cr-magnetite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa21.7±11.1, range Fa5.0-46.0, N = 16; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.01-0.26 wt.%, mean 0.10±0.08 wt.%, N = 14), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs20.0±9.2Wo1.1±0.8, range Fs2.2-37.5Wo0.4-2.8, N = 15). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.62.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3). The mean and standard deviation of Cr2O3 contents in ferroan olivine are consistent with a relatively low (but unspecified) petrologic subtype according to Figure 15a in Grossman and Brearley (2005).

Specimens: 37.0 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. N. Gessler.
