Northwest Africa 15423 (NWA 15423)

Algeria

Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: Purchased by L. A. Boltryk in 2020 from a Spanish dealer, who had obtained the material from an Algerian source.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Breccia composed of lithic clasts with subophitic texture plus related debris in a sparse fine grained matrix. Minerals are exsolved pigeonite, calcic plagioclase, pigeonite, augite, silica polymorph, chromite, ilmenite, troilite, merrillite and baddeleyite.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene hosts (Fs60.1-63.1Wo1.8-4.4, FeO/MnO = 28-31, N = 15), augite exsolution lamellae (Fs26.5-28.0Wo44.3-42.3, FeO/MnO = 28-30, N = 5), plagioclase (An88.3-91.9Or0.4-0.2, N = 3).

Classification: Eucrite (monomict breccia).

Specimens: 24.8 g including one polished thin section at PSF; remainder with Mr. L. Boltryk.
