Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 15336 (NWA 15336) Algeria Purchased: 2020 Feb Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite, polymict) History: Purchased by John Higgins in February 2020 from a Sahrawi dealer in Algeria. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Breccia composed predominantly of diogenitic orthopyroxene mineral clasts, some lithic diogenite clasts and minor (< 2 vol.%) fine-grained lithic eucrite clasts (with subophitic and intergranular textures). All diogenitic orthopyroxene is relatively ferroan. Other minerals are olivine (with intermediate Fe/Mg ratios), exsolved pigeonite, calcic plagioclase, and accessory chromite, ilmenite and troilite. Some secondary calcite veinlets are present. Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs31.8-33.9Wo2.7-4.3, FeO/MnO = 28-30, N = 10), pigeonite host (Fs24.9-27.8Wo18.3-12.1, FeO/MnO = 28-29, N = 2), augite lamellae (Fs10.0-12.4Wo46.6-44.6, FeO/MnO = 22-25, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs21.7Wo26.7, FeO/MnO = 28), olivine (Fa 44.7-45.9, FeO/MnO = 46-50, N = 5), plagioclase (An83.8-90.4Or0.5-0.3, N = 4). Classification: Diogenite (polymict breccia). Specimens: 20.1 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. J. Higgins. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
