Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 15421 (NWA 15421) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: Iron meteorite (IVA) History: Bought from a Moroccan meteorite dealer in 2021. Reportedly found in Algeria. Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Iron meteorite with striking recrystallization texture. Relictic octahedrite structure is visible with thin kamacite and taenite lamellae. Apparent band width (µm) of kamacite is 141±88 (48-370; n=40). The sizes of secondary grains are on the order of the kamacite band widths. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: The bulk Ni content, determined by SEM-EDX, is 8.5 wt%. Furthermore, the concentrations of Ni, Co and trace elements in this sample (and in Cape York and Muonionalusta as reference materials) were determined by dissolution ICP-MS (F. Spitzer, IfP): Ni 8.2 wt%; Co 0.39 wt%; Ga 2.2 µg/g; Rh 0.8 µg/g; Mo 5.8 µg/g. Classification: Bulk chemical data (Ni, Ga) and original structure are consistent with a IVA iron meteorite (finest octahedrite). Original texture modified by extensive recrystallization. | ||||||||||||||||||||
