Northwest Africa 15488 (NWA 15488)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5)

History: Purchased by Nicholas Gessler in 2022 from a Moroccan dealer.

Physical characteristics: Nine fresh, sub-angular individuals coated to the extent of 50-98% with black fusion crust.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU.) Sparse, relatively small equilibrated chondrules are set within a recrystallized matrix containing stained kamacite, chromite, sodic plagioclase, augite, troilite and merrillite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa18.3±0.2, range Fa18.1-18.6, N = 6), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs16.4±0.2Wo1.3±0.3, range Fs16.2-16.7Wo0.9-1.6, N = 7)

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5).

Specimens: 22.8 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. N. Gessler.
