Northwest Africa 15490 (NWA 15490)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Nicholas Gessler in 2022 from a Moroccan dealer.

Physical characteristics: A brick-shaped individual stone (2200 g, 16x7x7 cm) with one fusion crusted face.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 1070±620 µm, N = 25; one chondrule 5 mm) containing devitrified glass are set in a fine grained matrix containing kamacite, taenite, augite, troilite and chromite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa23.8±12.1, range Fa4.5-53.6, N = 16; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.02-0.30 wt.%, mean 0.08±0.07 wt.%, N = 14), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs11.1±6.5Wo0.6±0.5, range Fs5.0-17.8Wo0.2-1.3, N = 4), pigeonite (Fs11.2Wo5.6; Fs22.0±1.7Wo12.1±1.2, range Fs20.9-23.2Wo11.2-12.9; N = 3), subcalcic augite (Fs8.7Wo31.9). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.48.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3).

Specimens: 23.2 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. N. Gessler.
