Northwest Africa 15438 (NWA 15438)

Algeria

Find: 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: Found in 2021 in Algeria, later purchased in September 2021 by Chris Monk from Younes Chaoui.

Physical characteristics: Many stones with dark-brown fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Specimen is comprised of mm-sized sub-angular lithic clasts (primarily diabasic and gabbroic clasts, some containing exsolved augite) and monomineralic clasts set within a fine-grained matrix containing accessory Cr-spinel, ilmenite, and SiO2-rich glass.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs60.9±2.7Wo3.8±0.4, range Fs58.9-62.8Wo3.5-4.1, Fe/Mn=30±1, n=2), Pigeonite (Fs55.2±1.3Wo8.0±1.4, range Fs53.7-57.4Wo5.6-9.6, Fe/Mn=30±1, n=12), High-Ca Pyroxene (Fs31.0±0.9Wo37.4±0.9, range Fs29.5-32.4Wo35.6-38.8, Fe/Mn=30±2, n=11), Calcic Plagioclase (An89.2±2.3, range An83.8-93.0, n=16).

Classification: Achondrite (Eucrite).

Specimens: 20.3 grams at Cascadia, main mass with Chris Monk.
