Writeup from MB 112:

Northwest Africa 15522 (NWA 15522)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Clast-rich melt rock, consisting of mm-sized basalt clasts and related debris (pyroxene and plagioclase fragments), embedded in a crystallized vesicular melt. The entire rock is thermally recrystallized, consisting of subgrains with sizes mostly <50 µm. Most subgrains in pyroxene are unequilibrated and chemically zoned. Accessories are ilmenite, chromium spinel, and a silica polymorph.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean pyroxene composition: Fs46.4±4.0Wo12.2±2.3 (Fs41.3-53.0Wo8.4-16.7); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 29.6; n=11. Mean plagioclase composition: An88.8±3.8Or0.2±0.3 (An80.1-91.9Or0.0-0.7); n=11.

Classification: Eucrite (clast-rich melt rock)
