Bir Ounane 002 21°52’1.78"N, 3°16’51.61"W Gao, Mali Find: September 15, 2022 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated) History: The meteorite was found on September 15, 2022, in Northern Mali and subsequently purchased by the main mass holder from Mr. J. Z. Sidi, Spain. Physical characteristics: Grayish rock largely covered with fusion crust. Petrography: Fragmental breccia composed of up to 8 mm sized basaltic, small black melt, and mineral clasts in a fine-grained clastic mineral matrix. Predominant minerals are up to 1 mm sized exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, and ilmenite. No metallic iron detected. Contains thin shock melt veins. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to augite exsolution lamellae: Fs60.2±0.2Wo1.6±0.1 (Fs59.6-60.2Wo1.5-1.6, FeO/MnO=29-31, n=7); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs28.0±1.6Wo40.8±2.1 (Fs26.1-31.2Wo36.5-42.0, FeO/MnO=28-30, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An88.6±0.8 (An88.3-90.0, n=7) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
