Northwest Africa 15599 (NWA 15599)

Purchased: October, 2022

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorite hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in October, 2022.

Physical characteristics: Five dark brownish fragments partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a dark brownish to orange interior and consists of sparse, well separated chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 750 µm) set in abundant recrystallized matrix dominated by ferroan Ni-bearing olivine. Minor phases are low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, nests of intermediate plagioclase, Cl-apatite, and FeS. Cr-rich magnetite is abundant; no metal detected.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa26.2±0.2 (Fa25.7-26.6, FeO/MnO=90±9; NiO=0.54±0.03 wt%, n=12); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs24.2±0.3Wo0.5±0.1 (Fs23.8-24.7Wo0.4-0.5, n=7); diopside: Fs8.3±0.1Wo48.2±0.4 (Fs8.2-8.5Wo47.8-48.8, n=7); feldspar: An19.0-35.4Ab62.5-75.9Or2.1-8.9, n=7; magnetite contains 3.50±0.03 wt% Cr2O3, n=4
