Writeup from MB 112:
Northwest Africa 15585 (NWA 15585) Mali Purchased: 2022 Sep Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated) History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in September 2022 from a Malian dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) The specimen has a metamorphic texture and consists of interlocking angular mineral grains (0.2-4.2 mm) of predominantly exsolved pigeonite and calcic plagioclase with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite and troilite. There is no distinct fine grained matrix. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene host (Fs61.6-62.6Wo1.6-2.9, FeO/MnO = 31-32, N = 4), augite exsolution lamellae (Fs25.9-29.3Wo44.5-38.8, FeO/MnO = 31-33, N = 4), plagioclase (An85.8-89.9Or0.5-0.3, N = 3). Classification: Eucrite (annealed breccia). The interlocking texture of mineral grains of differing size and the absence of matrix suggest that this is a recrystallized mineral breccia. Specimens: 12.5 g in the form of a polished endcut at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
