Northwest Africa 15591 (NWA 15591)

Purchased: June 2022

Classification: Iron meteorite (ungrouped)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer at the mineral and gem show in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France.

Physical characteristics: Dark brownish, mostly rounded individual without fusion crust.

Petrography: Polished and etched surface shows a well-developed Widmanstätten pattern with kamacite lamellae (bandwidth 0.4.-0.7 mm) and plessite areas between them. Rare about 1-2 mm sized troilite inclusions are present. Minor alteration extends along fractures into the interior.

Geochemistry: ICP-MS data (Vinciane Debaille, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium): Ni = 9.53, Co = 0.36, P = 0.13 (all wt%); Cr = 17.6, Cu = 131.8, Ge = 7.39, Ga = 2.60, As = 10.9, Mo = 5.60, Pd = 2.91, Ir = 0.40, Au = 0.77 (all ppm); µXRF data (MfN, Berlin): Ni = 9.51; Co = 0.35; P = 0.11 (all wt%)

Classification: Iron meteorite (ungrouped). Ungrouped based on Ge and low Co contents plus Au/As and Au/Ni ratios that do not fit any known iron meteorite group.
