Writeup from MB 112:

Northwest Africa 15626 (NWA 15626)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Algeria.

Physical characteristics: Several dark brownish rocks lacking fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia composed of silicate (about 70 vol%) and strongly altered metallic (about 30 vol%) portions. The silicate fraction is dominated by up to 7 mm sized angular to subrounded low-Ca pyroxene and up to 1 mm calcic plagioclase grains in more fine-grained related mineral matrix. Orthopyroxenes are often weakly compositionally zoned and sometimes contain blebby and lamellar augite exsolutions. Minor phases are silica, chromite, and Cr-bearing troilite. The metal is almost completely altered to iron oxides and hydroxides; only few small kamacite grains were detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs27.4±1.9Wo2.1±0.1 (Fs24.3-29.2Wo1.9-2.2, FeO/MnO=25-31, n=15); augite exsolutions: Fs10.8±0.4Wo44.7±0.5 (Fs10.4-11.6Wo43.7-45.1, FeO/MnO=18-22, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An93.0±2.4 (An89.7-96.0, n=10)
