Writeup from MB 112:
Northwest Africa 15649 (NWA 15649) Niger Purchased: March 2022 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5) History: Purchased on March, 2022 by Thomas C. Garner through a seller in Niamey, Niger. Physical characteristics: Two identical looking stones, saw cut reveals a mottled tan and brown interior with mm sized metal blebs. The two stones may have broken apart in flight, as the fractured areas on both stones display what appears to be secondary fusion crust. The pieces fit together. Petrography: (D. Dickens, CCMS) Microprobe and optical examination of polished probe mount shows sparse poorly delineated chondrules set in a recrystallized matrix. Kamacite was observed in mm sized blebs with staining occurring in adjacent silicates. Geochemistry: (D. Dickens, CCMS, and A. S. Bell, CUB) Olivine Fa24.8±0.2, n=7; low-Ca pyroxene Fs21.0±0.5 Wo1.5±0.4, n=6. Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5) Specimens: 31 g on deposit with Cascadia; 3.54 kg main mass is with Logan Garner, Thomas Garner holds a 2.14 kg mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
