Northwest Africa 15297 (NWA 15297)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-6)

History: The meteorite was reportedly found 2021 in Algeria and subsequently purchased from a local meteorite dealer.

Physical characteristics: Many light grayish fragments with some patches of fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a grayish interior and is composed of up to 1 mm sized mostly angular type 6 clasts in type 3 host lithology. In type 6 clasts, ferroan olivine, Ca-pyroxene, and sodic plagioclase are the predominant mineral phases. In the host lithology, chondrules have an average diameter of about 400 µm and the matrix abundance is ~40%; olivine and low-Ca pyroxene are compositionally unequilibrated. Opaques phases are sulfides and Ti-bearing chromite; no metal detected.

Geochemistry: type 3 lithology: olivine: Fa33.7±7.7 (Fa17.9-38.6, n=15); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs17.8±3.5Wo1.1±0.9 (Fs12.6-24.3Wo0.3-2.8, n=12); type 6 lithology: olivine: Fa37.9±0.4 (FeO/MnO=78±3, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs10.1±0.9Wo45.0±1.2, n=7; feldspar: An10.0-12.1Ab85.2-87.2Or2.0-3.4, n=7
