Writeup from MB 112:
Northwest Africa 15634 (NWA 15634) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2022 Jun Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3) History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang in June 2022 from a dealer in Erfoud, Morocco. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Relatively large well-formed, unequilibrated chondrules (some with multiple rims, apparent diameter 1030 ± 550 µm, N = 25) and large fine-grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~40 vol.%, orange-brown in thin section) containing Cr magnetite, augite, intermediate plagioclase (and some glass of similar composition), rare troilite and minor secondary barite. Mineral phases identified in CAI include gehlenite, anorthite, diopside, spinel, hedenbergite and sodalite. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa15.8±15.3, range Fa0.3-38.7, N = 20), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs2.8±1.2Wo0.9±0.1, range Fs1.3-3.8Wo0.8-1.0, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs2.1±0.5Wo36.4±2.1, range Fs1.8-2.5Wo37.9-35.0, N = 2), augite (Fs5.6±6.9Wo46.0±1.9, range Fs0.4-15.6Wo43.8-48.0, N = 5), plagioclase (Ab83.9-92.2An15.3-6.0Or0.9-1.8, N = 2), magnetite (Cr2O3 1.4-2.9 wt.%, N = 7). Mineral phases in CAI: diopside (Fs1.5Wo48.0, Al2O3 1.3 wt.%), anorthite (An98.9Or0.0). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3). Specimens: 20.3 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
