Northwest Africa 15661 (NWA 15661) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2022 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5) History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco. Physical characteristics: Dark brownish rock without fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite displays a dark grayish interior and is composed of well defined separated chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 800 µm) in recrystallized matrix. Predominant mineral phase is Fe-rich, Ni-bearing olivine. Subordinate are low-Ca pyroxene, diopside, intermediate plagioclase, and minor pentlandite. Cr-rich magnetite is abundant; no CAIs detected. Geochemistry: olivine: Fa30.7±0.2 (Fa30.3-31.1, FeO/MnO=133±13; NiO=0.76±0.03 wt%, n=10); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs25.4±0.4Wo0.7±0.2 (Fs24.4-25.9Wo0.6-1.2, n=15); Ca-pyroxene: Fs5.1±2.4Wo39.1±1.8 (Fs1.7-10.3Wo35.3-41.5, n=10); feldspar: An19.3-34.5Ab62.6-73.7Or2.1-6.9, n=10; magnetite contains 4.57±0.05 wt% Cr2O3, n=7 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
