Writeup from MB 112:

Northwest Africa 15685 (NWA 15685)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6)

History: Many samples (<1 to 289 g) were found in northwest Africa. Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER meteorites) purchased the meteorites from Salamo Zigam in Tindouf, Algeria in 2022.

Physical characteristics: Sample is a dark-colored, irregularly shaped, partially crusted stone. The cut face shows the interior is dark green in color and shows dispersed dark-colored chondrules.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample shows a recrystallized chondritic with large dispersed chondrules (avg. apparent diameter 776 µm, n=18) in a recrystallized matrix composed of olivine, high Ca pyroxene, plagioclase (avg grain size 76 µm, n=11) and Cr-bearing magnetite. Additional minerals are: chromite apatite and rare troilite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (Fa31.8±0.2, Fe/Mn=103.7±4.7, n=10); low Ca-pyroxene (Fs27.0±0.3Wo0.9±0.1, Fe/Mn=68.9±2.7 n=6); high Ca pyroxene (Fs9.2±0.5Wo48.7±0.5, n=4); Magnetite (Cr2O3=3.6±0.3wt%, n=6).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6 C-S2 wi-2). Based on chondrule diameters, mineral compositions, presence of Cr-bearing magnetite and texture, sample is a CK6.

Specimens: Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER meteorites) holds the main masses. A polished thin section and 2 partially crusted individuals weighing 23.34 g are on deposit at App.
