Northwest Africa 15731 (NWA 15731)

Purchased: Dec 2022

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H3)

History: Two stones (347 g and 259 g) reportedly found by meteorite hunters in Mauritania und subsequently purchased by Mr. Jasper Spencer from a Mauritanian dealer via Facebook Messenger.

Physical characteristics: Brownish stones with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a chondritic texture with sharply defined, mostly rounded, and partly packed chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 0.4 mm) set in a light brownish matrix containing abundant metal and sulfides. Contains black melt clasts.

Geochemistry: Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.04±0.04 wt%, n=31.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H3).
