Writeup from MB 112:
Northwest Africa 15737 (NWA 15737) Algeria Find: 2021 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) History: Found in Algeria, in the Erg Chech area, in 2021 Physical characteristics: A dark irregular stone. Cut surface reveals a dark grey interior with large chondrules and abundant matrix. Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrite with large chondrules and CAIs to 2 mm set in an abundant recrystallized matrix with average plagioclase size 70 µm. Magnetite is abundant in matrix, as blebs to 300 µm, and in chondrules, as blebs to 200 µm and along chondrule rims. Sulfides (pentlandite) are rare due to terrestrial weathering. No metal was osberved. Geochemistry: Olivine Fa23.2±15.8, range Fa0.5-37.2, NiO = 0.23±0.19 wt% (n=8). Pyroxene Fs15.1Wo50.2 (n=1). Plagioclase An30.1Ab68.2Or1.7 (n=1). Magnetite Cr2O3 2.91±0.44 wt% (n=4). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3). CK3 based on the scatter in olivine composition, and the Cr2O3 content of magnetite. Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE, main mass with Isabelle Pothier | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
