Writeup from MB 112:

Northwest Africa 15027 (NWA 15027)

Niger

Purchased: 2022 Jan

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: Found in Niger and purchased by Mbark Arjdal in January 2022 from a dealer in Niger.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) This specimen is a heterogeneous breccia containing sporadic larger, polygranular aggregates of olivine (up to 7 by 8 mm in size) and smaller clasts of anorthite in a matrix composed in some places of intergrown orthopyroxene and anorthite with minor silica polymorph and in other places composed of intergrown metal and orthopyroxene. Kamacite (typically altered to Fe oxides) is distributed irregularly. The original metal content is estimated to ~40 vol%. Accessory phases include troilite, Al-Mg-rich chromite and merrillite. Cross-cutting veinlets of secondary Fe hydroxides are present.

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene (Fs28.0-28.8Wo1.5-2.1; Fs35.4-36.1Wo3.2-3.5; FeO/MnO = 26-29; N = 4), olivine (Fa27.2-30.1, FeO/MnO = 41-43, N = 6), anorthite (An90.2-93.6Or0.2, N = 3).

Classification: Mesosiderite (breccia).

Specimens: 23.0 g including a polished mount at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
