Northwest Africa 15560 (NWA 15560)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Iron meteorite (IIAB)

History: A single, 48 kg mass was purchased by Mark Lyon from a dealer in Mauritania in 2021. Reportedly found in Algeria.

Petrography: (C. Herd, UAb) Optical examination of a ~3 × 5 cm polished and etched surface reveals a fine-grained, equilibrated texture with no inclusions. No terrestrial alteration is evident.

Geochemistry: ICP-MS data, using sample of North Chile (Filomena) as standard (C. Herd and S. DuFrane UAb): Ni = 5.5, Co = 0.442 (both in wt%); Ir = 30, Ga = 59, Ge = 161, As = 3.7, Ru = 25, Pd = 1.6, Re = 2.6, W = 3.6, Pt = 35, Cu = 143, Au = 0.55 (all μg/g).

Classification: (C. Herd, UAb): IIAB iron.

Specimens: Type specimen of 49.2 g at UAb. Main mass with Mark Lyon.
