Writeup from MB 112:
Northwest Africa 15777 (NWA 15777) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2022 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L7) History: A single 83 g sample was found in northwest Africa and was purchased by Shun Chung Yang (S-R meteorites) in 2023. Physical characteristics: Stone has an irregular shape and is mottled brownish orange with dispersed 0.5 cm-sized diopside crystals. Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample shows: up to 5mm oikocrysts of orthopyroxene and (up to 3 mm) clinopyroxene that enclose smaller rounded chadacrysts of olivine, up to 3.5mm regions of plagioclase networks that enclose olivine and orthopyroxene and regions composed entirely of granoblastic textured olivine and orthopyroxene. Additional minerals are: weakly zoned plagioclase, up to 3mm-sized FeNi grains(~2 vol%), troilite, chromite and apatite. Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (Fa22.9±0.2, Fe/Mn=43.2±0.9, n=12); low Ca-pyroxene (Fs20.3±0.3Wo2.2±0.2, Fe/Mn=27.1±0.8 n=12); Ca-pyroxene (Fs8.4±0.4Wo41.5±1.5, Fe/Mn=19.8±1.6 n=8); plagioclase (Ab83.9±2.3Or4.7±1.1 n=20). Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L7 U-S1 W1). Based on recrystallized textures, presence of plagioclase networks (Tait et al, 2014) and mineral compositions, sample is an L7. Specimens: Shun-Chung Yang (S-R meteorites) holds the main mass. A polished thin section and a crusted individual weighing 20.3 g are on deposit at App. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
