Northwest Africa 15826 (NWA 15826)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022 Sep

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Ziyao Wang in September 2022 from a dealer in Dchira, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS, and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-defined small, unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 170 ± 70 µm, N = 25) along with small amoeboid CAI and small mineral fragments are set in a fine grained matrix (~35 vol.%, black in thin section) containing Cr-poor magnetite, kamacite, taenite, troilite and pentlandite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa20.3±20.5, range Fa1.4-53.3, N = 5; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.20-0.40 wt.%, mean 0.28 wt.%, sd 0.07 wt.%, N = 7), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs1.3±0.3Wo1.9±1.7, range Fs1.0-1.6Wo0.7-3.9, N = 3), augite (Fs1.5±0.3Wo37.3±2.8, range Fs1.3-1.7Wo39.3-35.3, N = 2), magnetite (Cr2O3 0.01wt.%, 1.2 wt.%, N = 2).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3, magnetite-bearing).

Specimens: 11.3 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with WangZ.
