Northwest Africa 15850 (NWA 15850) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2019 Nov Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite) History: Reportedly found in Mauritania by nomads in 2019 and subsequently purchased by Mr. Jasper Spencer from a Mauritanian meteorite dealer via Facebook Messenger. Physical characteristics: One stone with patchy fusion crust and some regmaglypts. Petrography: Breccia composed of up to 1. 5 cm sized basaltic fragments showing coarse- and fine-grained intersertal texutes of lath-shaped calcic plagioclases and pyroxenes set in a fine-grained clastic mineral matrix. Pyroxenes show pronounced compositional zoning and not exsolved. Minor phases include fayalite, silica, chromite, ilmenite, FeS, and Ni-free metal. Contains recrystallized shock melt veins. Geochemistry: zoned pyroxene: Fs41.9±11.0Wo10.7±6.3 (Fs31.7-62.1Wo5.0-23.8, FeO/MnO=25-31, n=15); fayalite: Fa82.8±0.1, FeO/MnO=38±1, n=3; plagioclase: An89.9±1.5 (An87.8-92.4, n=10). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
