(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020 Apr

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased by Luc Labenne in April 2020 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS; P. Carpenter, WUSL; G. Motta, A. Ostwald, S. Ramsey and A. Udry, UNLV):Diabasic subophitic texture. Composed mainly of patchily zoned, prismatic clinopyroxene grains (51.3 vol.%; up to 2.5 mm in length) and lath-like grains of maskelynite (41.7 vol.%) together with relatively abundant merrillite (6.5%) and minor ilmenite, silica polymorph, fayalite, baddeleyite and pyrrhotite. Pyroxene compositions include pigeonite, subcalcic augite and ferropigeonite (predominantly at grain rims).

Geochemistry: Pigeonite cores (Fs27.0-56.5Wo8.7-19.6, FeO/MnO = 28-39, N = 38), subcalcic augite cores (Fs19.3-48.7Wo240.0-36.8, FeO/MnO = 26-40, N = 29), ferropigeonite rims (Fs53.6-84.9Wo8.4-17.9, FeO/MnO = 33-51, N = 61), maskelynite (An56.5-67.5Or0.1-0.6, N = 36), fayalite (Fa98.4, FeO/MnO = 47).

Classification: Shergottite (diabasic).

Specimens: 21.2 g including a polished thin section and a polished mount at UWB; remainder with Labenne.
