Northwest Africa 15888 (NWA 15888)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5/6)

History: Purchased by Edwin Thompson in 2021 from a meteorite dealer in Agadir, Morocco. Later acquired by Paul Stahura.

Physical characteristics: Two stones with dark fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Specimen is comprised of chondrules (Av. diameter ~850 μm) set within a fine-grained matrix containing secondary recrystallized plagioclase (Av. grain size ~30 μm in most chondrules, >50 μm in matrix) and accessory sulfide and Cr-bearing magnetite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa31.2±0.3, range Fa30.1-31.9, NiO=0.5±0.1 wt. %, n=38), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs26.5±0.2Wo0.6±0.1, range Fs26.4-26.6Wo0.5-0.6, n=2), Augite (Fs15.3±2.7Wo48.1±0.9, range Fs11.1-19.4Wo46.5-49.5, n=11), Magnetite (Cr2O3=4.0±0.2 wt. %, TiO2=0.3±0.1 wt. %, n=5).

Classification: Carbonaceous Chondrite (CK5/6).

Specimens: 25.9 g at Cascadia, main mass with Paul Stahura.
