Northwest Africa 15942 (NWA 15942)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Clast-rich melt rock, consisting of mm- to cm-sized basaltic clasts and related debris (pyroxene and plagioclase fragments), embedded in a crystallized melt. Most pyroxene grains show augite exsolution lamellae. The entire rock is extensively recrystallized, consisting of subgrains with sizes mostly <50 µm. Accessories are chromium spinel, ilmenite, and troilite.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean composition of low-Ca pyroxene: Fs62.6±0.4 Wo2.5±0.3 (Fs62.1-63.3 Wo2.1-2.9); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 32; n=10. Mean composition of high-Ca pyroxene: Fs27.1±0.4 Wo42.8±0.3 (Fs26.6-27.8 Wo42.4-43.2); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 31; n=10. Mean plagioclase composition: An88±4.6 Or0.4±0.4 (An80.1-94.1 Or0.0-1.6); n=11.

Classification: Eucrite (clast-rich melt rock)
