Northwest Africa 15962 (NWA 15962)

Purchased: 2023 Jan

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Clast-rich melt rock, consisting of basalt clasts (up to several cm) with basaltic and gabbroic textures and mineral fragments (mostly pyroxene and plagioclase), embedded in a crystallized melt. Most pyroxene grains show shock-deformed exsolution lamellae. Accessories are a silica polymorph, ilmenite, spinel, and troilite.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (host): Fs60.5±0.6Wo4.7±0.8 (Fs59.5-61.7Wo3.4-5.8); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 34.5; n=16. Ca-rich pyroxene (exsolution lamellae) Fs30.8±1.6Wo40.6±1.5 (Fs28.4-33.4 Wo38.2-42.9); n=18. Plagioclase An88.6±1.5 Or0.4±0.3 (An85.9-91.0Or0.0-0.9); n=18.
