Northwest Africa 15983 (NWA 15983)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: December 2021

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5)

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in December 2021 from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Single stone with slightly weathered dark brown fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is an equilibrated ordinary chondrite containing secondary recrystallized feldspar (Av. ~12 μm) and accessory Fe-Ni metal, troilite, and chromite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa18.4±0.4, range Fa17.8-19.6, n=43), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs16.1±0.5Wo1.4±0.7, range Fs14.1-16.9Wo0.9-3.3, n=36).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5).

Specimens: 20.5 g at Cascadia, main mass with Jason Whitcomb.
