Writeup from MB 112:

Northwest Africa 16031 (NWA 16031)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2023 Jan

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVred3)

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrite with chondrules with average apparent 1200±510 µm (n=19) and CAIs to 5 mm set in abundant iron-rich fine-grained matrix (37 vol% by point counting, n=305). Opaque minerals are metal (including tetrataenite), troilite, magnetite, present in chondrules and in matrix. Metal and troilite are encountered as blebs to 300 µm.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa3.71±4.42, range Fa0.3-14.1, Fa PMD 101% (n=14). Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine (Fa>1) 0.20±0.14 (n=8). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs1.26±0.44Wo2.28±1.46, range Fs0.94-2.13 (n=5). Defocused analyses of the matrix yield FeO=42.1±6.3 wt% and analytical total 89±4.0 wt% (n=5).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVred3). CVred based on the low Fa average value, and the significant metal content.

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE, main mass with Kuntz
