Writeup from MB 112:

Northwest Africa 15961 (NWA 15961)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Unbrecciated ordinary chondrite with well-defined chondrules and chondrule fragments. Moderate amounts of Fe-Ni metal, mostly oxidized by terrestrial weathering. Olivine is equilibrated but pyroxene still shows some chemical variation (PMD of Fs values: ~5).

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean olivine composition: Fa24.7±0.3 (Fa24.1-25.4; n=15); mean low-Ca pyroxene composition: Fs19.9±1.0Wo0.9±0.7 (Fs17.4-20.9Wo0.3-2.8; n=12).

Classification: L chondrite based on mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 4 due to the equilibrated state of olivine and unequilibrated state of pyroxene.
