Rio de Oro, Western Sahara

Find: 2021 Mar

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Polymict achondritic breccia, consisting of mineral fragments and some lithic clasts (up to several mm), set in a fine-grained clastic matrix of related debris. Lithic clasts: eucritic basalts (mostly ophitic), eucritic granulites, various types of impact melt rocks (some with glassy groundmass). Mineral fragments: equilibrated and unequilibrated eucritic pyroxene, diogenitic pyroxene, feldspar. Several olivine grains were found. Accessories: a silica polymorph, chromite, ilmenite, troilite, traces of metal. Diogenite components: ~50 vol%.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Eucritic granulite: Low-Ca pyroxene (host): Fs53.0±0.2 Wo5.9±0.6 (Fs52.6-53.2 Wo5.5-7.0); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 33; n=5. Ca-rich pyroxene (exsolution lamellae): Fs29.1±1.5Wo36.0±2.2 (Fs27.7-30.6Wo34.0-38.0); n=4. Plagioclase: An87.3±1.2 Or0.3±0.2 (An86.1-89.6Or0.0-0.7); n=10. Diogenitic pyroxene: Fs22.5±2.0Wo2.3±0.6 (Fs18.0-24.8Wo1.1-3.2); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 33; n=18. Olivine: Fa12.8±2.0 (Fa10.9-15.1); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 53; n=4.

Classification: Howardite, based on mineral chemistry, variety of eucritic lithologies, and occurrence of >10 vol% of diogenitic components.
