Ghardaia, Algeria

Find: 2022 Sep

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Polymict achondritic breccia, consisting of mineral fragments and some lithic clasts (up to several mm), set in a fine-grained clastic matrix of related debris. Lithic clasts: eucritic basalts (ophitic to subophitic), various types of impact melt rocks. Mineral fragments: eucritic pyroxene (mostly exsolved), diogenitic pyroxene, feldspar. Accessories: a silica polymorph, chromite, ilmenite, troilite. Diogenite components: ~30 vol%.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Eucrite components: Low-Ca pyroxene (host): Fs50.2±12.0 Wo4.1±1.1 (Fs31.8-59.9Wo2.5-5.9); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 30.4; n=10. Ca-rich pyroxene (exsolution lamellae) Fs28.2±2.4Wo39.8±1.1 (Fs24.9-30.6Wo38.4-40.9); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 29.1; n=7. Diogenitic pyroxene: Fs21.6±3.4Wo2.0±0.7 (Fs16.9-26.4Wo1.2-3.3); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 30.5; n=10. Plagioclase An88.1±5.3Or0.3±0.3 (An80.1-95.3Or0.0-0.8); n=9.

Classification: Howardite, based on mineral chemistry, variety of eucritic lithologies, and occurrence of >10 vol% of diogenitic components.
