Writeup from MB 112:

Northwest Africa 15897 (NWA 15897)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2023

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Many brownish fragments lacking fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a dark brownish interior and is predominantly composed of abundant large metal-decorated type I and rare type II chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 700 µm) that often contain large metal blebs set into a fine-grained ferroan matrix. The matrix contains magnetite platelets and framboids; sulfides are present in type II chondrules and the matrix. No CAIs have been detected.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa7.8±10.3 (Fa0.3-30.9), contains 0.41±0.13 wt% Cr2O3; low-Ca pyroxene: Fs1.9±0.5Wo0.7±0.2 (Fs1.1-2.4Wo0.4-1.0); matrix analyses yield an average total of 88.3±0.9 wt% (5 µm defocused beam, N=7) indicating the presence of hydrous minerals.
