Saguia el Hamra, Western Sahara

Classification: Ungrouped achondrite

Physical characteristics: The investigated sample is partly covered by dark fusion crust and shows fresh fracture surfaces.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Unbrecciated and unshocked ultramafic rock, consisting almost exclusively of diopside and enstatite (mean grain size > 1 mm). Enstatite also occurs as small irregular units within the diopside grains and as exsolution lamellae within diopside crystals along various crystallographic directions. Daubréelite, ferroan alabandite, and CrS2 (probably cronusite) were found as accessory minerals (mostly terrestrially altered), indicating reducing formation conditions. No olivine or feldspar were found.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Diopside composition: Fs0.1±0.1Wo43.0±1.0 (Fs0.0-0.3Wo41.9-45.3); Fe/Mn (at.) 0.5; n=11. Enstatite composition: Fs0.1±0.1Wo1.4±0.9 (Fs0.0-0.2Wo0.5-2.9); Fe/Mn (at) =0.4; n=x.

Classification: Ungrouped achondrite (Mg-rich websterite).
