Northwest Africa 15960 (NWA 15960)

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK4)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Chondrules, chondrule fragments, and CAIs are embedded in a recrystallized dark brown matrix, which is interspersed with magnetite grains and nodules. The range of apparent sizes of most chondrules is 0.5-1.5 mm (up to 3 mm). Chondrules with igneous rims are frequently observed. Most olivine is equilibrated but some large olivine grains show Mg-rich cores as relicts.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean olivine composition: Fa34.0±0.4 (Fa33.0-34.5); mean NiO concentration: 0.41 wt%; n=15. Mean pyroxene composition: Fs6.9±5.8 Wo42.8±6.0 (Fs1.4-12.4 Wo34.2-48.0); n=6. Magnetite shows significant concentrations of elements other than Fe (wt%): MgO 0.3-0.7; Al2O3 2.5-3.8; TiO2 0.9-1.3; Cr2O3 3.5-4.4; NiO 0.2-0.7 (n=5).

Classification: CK chondrite based on texture and mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 4 based on the equilibrated state of olivine and the chemical variation of pyroxene.
